Garden Patches
There are three different garden patches that can be placed in any yard. The best to purchase depends on why you're gardening and how serious you are about it. Obviously the deluxe patch is the optimum garden, especially if you're interbreeding seeds. But any will work. All garden patches can be purchased from a housing vendor in any ward, or from a junk monger inside player houses. Small, medium and large houses can hold one, two and three beds respectively. | Round Garden Patch 4 beds 3,000 gil Oblong Garden Patch 6 beds 12,000 gil Deluxe Garden Patch 8 beds 48,000 gil |
Topsoil
Before planting seeds in your new garden, you'll have to apply a sack of topsoil. Topsoil can be acquired by mining, or by purchasing on the market board. Buying topsoil, however, is pricey. Very pricey. Some soils can go as high as 20k per sack, and you'll need one sack for each bed you plan to use in your patch.
There are three types of topsoil: La Noscean, Shroud and Thanalan. And each type has three grades. The type determines the effect of the soil and the grade will determine the effectiveness.

Planting Seeds
If you're intercrossing seeds to produce a new seed, then just as important as where your seeds are planted in your garden is the order in which they are planted.
Whether or not a bed will intercross with its neighbor is determined at the time of planting. For this reason, the first bed planted will never produce a crossed seed. See the images below demonstrating the right and wrong way to plant your garden.

Wrong! In this example, all of the prickly pineapple seeds are planted, followed by all of the honey lemon seeds. Although grade 3 Thanalan topsoil was used, only the beds with honey lemons will produce the cross, apricot kernels. This is because nothing was next to any of the pineapple seeds when they were planted. | Correct! This time, seeds were planted clockwise, alternating prickly pineapple and honey lemon. The result was that seven of the eight beds produced apricot kernels. Because nothing was next to the first seed when it was planted, the first bed did not yield a crossed seed. Since this will always be the case, it's okay to use a cheaper soil in this bed. |
Caring for Your Garden
Two actions are used to care for your garden: Fertilize and tend. Both of these actions should be performed on each bed frequently to ensure that your patch stays alive grows as quickly as possible, however only tending is needed to complete the growing process successfully.
Tending
Tending a bed is what keeps the plant alive. Simply select a bed and then the tend option. This should be done at least once every Earth day. If the plants go untended for too long, they will begin to wither (surrounded in a purple cloud) and will eventually die if not tended in three Earth days.
Plants can be tended as often as you would like, and cannot be over-tended. All players are able to tend plants in any garden, even those that aren't their own.
